The Society of St.Pius X ( Districts USA/Canada, Italy,India etc) are aware that Bishop Bernard Fellay has made a fundamental error in his last Letter to Friends and Benefactors and that this is also an irrationality which was overlooked by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre. They are also aware that in most of their publications they have overlooked this factual error.
No one from Econe, the SSPX Headquarters, is admitting in public that Nostra Aetate 2 does not contradict the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus. It would only contradict the dogma on exclusive salvation in the Catholic Church if the SSPX infers that those saved with 'a ray of the Truth' (NA 2) are physically visible on earth.It is with this irrationality of being able to see the deceased-saved that NA 2 becomes an exception to the traditional teaching on salvation and other religions i.e all need to convert into the Church in 2014 to be saved from Hell.(John 3:5,Mark 16:16).
The SSPX is aware that this is a factual error and not theology.They do not want to issue a correction. They choose to continue to use the irrational inference to create a new doctrine (1) only those who know about the Church need to convert as compared to those who are in invincible ignorance and can be saved allegedly without the baptism of water (2) every one in 2014 does not need to convert into the Catholic Church for salvation, since those saved with the baptism of desire, invincible ignorance or ' a ray of the Truth' are visible exceptions in 2014.
Those who 'know' (LG 14) and yet do not enter and are damned to Hell and those who do not know (invincible ignorance-LG 16) are not known to us on earth. So they are irrelevant to the dogma on exclusive salvation. Vatican Council II refers to them as possibilities and not exceptions. No Church-text states that these cases are explicit for us.It is Bishop Bernard Fellay who infers that these cases are explicit for us and so contradict extra ecclesiam nulla salus .
So he rejects Vatican Council II for the wrong reason.
Vatican Council II without the irrational inference is traditional and in agreement with extra ecclesiam nulla salus. The Vatican Council II which he criticizes is the one with the inference.
The SSPX can resolve this problem by affirming all the documents of Vatican Council II , without the use of the inference. They can continue to reject Vatican Council II in which the inference is being used.
Cardinal Muller, Archbishop Augustine Di Noia, Cardinal Kurt Koch and the Vatican Curia interpret Vatican Council II with the false premise, the irrational inference.So there is no hermeneutic of continuity, instead there is the ambiguity of Cardinal Walter Kaspar.
