Bishop Bernard Fellay Superior General of the Society of St.Pius X (SSPX) refers to the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus. He says it is contradicted by Unitatis Redintigratio 3, Lumen Gentium 8 and Nostra Aetate 2 in Vatican Council II which refer to salvation for non Catholics.
In his Letter to Friends and Benefactors (April 13,2014) 1 he considers UR 3,LG 8 and NA 2 exceptions to the dogma on exclusive salvation in the Catholic Church.
It may be clarified by me that the dogma on exclusive salvation in the Catholic Church, defined by three Church Councils and which Pope Pius XII called an infallible teaching (Letter of the Holy Office 1949) says every one needs to be a member of the Catholic Church for salvation. The text does not mention any exceptions.This has been the traditional interpretation for centuries.
For Bishop Fellay UR 3, LG 8 and NA 2 are exceptions to this teaching and so he rejects Vatican Council II as did Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre.
Just as Nostra Aetate 2 was an exception to extra ecclesiam nulla salus for Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre the founder of the SSPX, Vatican Council II is also a contradiction for Bishop Fellay.
Archbishop Lefebvre considered NA 2 as referring to a seen in the flesh case on earth.It was something visible for him. So it became an exception. Only if it was visible for him could it be an exception.
For Bishop Bernard Fellay UR 3 etc refer to the deceased-saved and visible on earth. Only if they are visible can they be exceptions. For something or someone to be an exception it must be different and it must exist in our reality.
Bishop Fellay has written an Introduction for a book by Fr.Jean M.Gleize in which he too infers that the deceased saved with 'a ray of the Truth' (NA 2) etc are visible to us on earth.
"Obviously we cannot see the dead on earth" says Fr.Aldo Rossi, the prior of the SSPX at Albano, Italy."Those who are saved in invincible ignorance or the baptism of desire are visible only to God".This is also the message of other SSPX priests from Albano, Italy with whom I have spoken to. They contradict Bishop Fellay. They infer that NA 2,UR 3, LG 8 are not exceptions since they cannot be visible to us on earth.
If LG 8 etc were invisible for us then they would not contradict extra ecclesiam nulla salus.They would be compatible with the literal interpretation of Fr.Leonard Feeney.We could affirm all salvation mentioned in Vatican Council II as being implicit for us and we could also affirm the traditional interpretation of the dogma. We could have it both ways, as it is said.
A Protestant could be saved (UR 3) and it would be known only to God.However if this case was known to us in 2014 then only it would contradict the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus. So LG 8,UR 3,NA 2 are not relevant to the dogma on salvation.
Vatican Council II for me is in perfect agreement with the traditional teaching on exclusive salvation unless one infers that invisible for us cases are visible in the present times (2014).
UR 3,LG 8 etc do not contradict Ad Gentes 7 which says 'all' need 'faith and baptism' for salvation.I still have not found any SSPX publication which refers to AG 7.
Bishop Fellay has made an objective error in assuming that the dead-saved are visible to us.
Its a factual mistake.It is a fact of life that we cannot see the dead. He infers otherwise and so rejects Vatican Council II.
