CARDINAL ANGELO BAGNASCO INDICATES HOLY FATHER POPE BENEDICT XVI IS FALLIBLE AND IN HERESY


Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, Archbishop of Genoa and President of the Italian Catholic Bishops Conference(CEI) has stated that Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Vatican Secretary of State had clearly expressed the sentiments of the Holy Father to the Rabbinate of Israel after the Revised Prayer for the Conversion of the Jews was announced. This  was reported in Avvenire the daily newspaper of the Italian Bishops Conference. (23.09.2009). The report further said that after the CEI communiqué emphasized that there was no intention to actively convert Jews the Rabbinical Assembly decided to normalize relations which were broken in 2007. It was also noted that the prayer referred to the conversion of the Jews in the eschatological time(end of time) in the future and not now. There was to be no conversion of the Jews in the present times, the report indicated and that this had the approval of the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI. The Revised Prayer for the Conversion of the Jews was not for their conversion of present day Jews.


There was been no denial from Cardinal William Levada, Prefect, Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Neither has there been a denial by the office of the Secretary of State Cardinal T. Bertone.

From the Catholic perspective this is a denying of Jesus as the only and unique Saviour and a denying of the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus. Affirming the teaching outside the Catholic Church there is no salvation is obligatory for all Catholics as is our belief in the Immaculate Conception of Mary. Both are ex cathedra, infallible teachings.


This would mean, according to Cardinal Bagnasco and Cardinal Bertone that either the popes of the past were fallible or that Pope Benedict XVI is fallible on a faith issue. It would mean that Pope Benedict XVI, according the two Italian cardinals, is contradicting  the Catholic teaching on the infallibility of  popes on issues of faith. The cardinals indicate that the Holy Father is  also contradicting  the solemn ex cathedra teaching extra ecclesiam nulla salus.

It is also a contradiction of the teachings of Pope John Paul II.


Pope John Paul II has said that Judaism is not a path to salvation and Jews need to be oriented into the Catholic Church (Notification, Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith,Ref. Fr. Dupuis, 2001 by Cardinal Ratzinger).Even though Jesus died for all people, they need to respond for this salvation by entering the Church His Mystical Body (Dominus Iesus 21).Cardinal Bagnasco, Bertone and Kaspar are refuting the teachings of Pope John Paul II and are indicating that they have the approval of the Holy Father.

In 1949 the Vatican affirmed the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus and referred to it as an ‘infallible’ teaching.

Now, among those things which the Church has always preached and will never cease to preach is contained also that infallible statement by which we are taught that there is no salvation outside the Church.

However, this dogma must be understood in that sense in which the Church herself understands it. For, it was not to private judgments that Our Savior gave for explanation those things that are contained in the deposit of faith, but to the teaching authority of the Church.

Now, in the first place, the Church teaches that in this matter there is question of a most strict command of Jesus Christ. For He explicitly enjoined on His apostles to teach all nations to observe all things whatsoever He Himself had commanded (Matt. 28: 19-20).- Letter of the Holy Office 1949 to the Archbishop of Boston relative to Fr. The Church Councils, popes and saints interpreted the dogma as: de facto all people need to enter the Catholic Church for salvation and there are no exceptions. However in principle (de jure) there can be exceptions (invincible ignorance etc) known only to God. This was an ex cathedra, infallible teaching of the Bull Unam Sanctam of Pope Boniface VIII and other Councils. It is an obligatory Catholic teaching for all popes, cardinals, bishops, religious and laity to follow. It was repeated by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Vatican in the 1949 Letter to the Archbishop of Boston with reference to the Jews in Boston and Fr.Leonard Feeney.

Cardinal Bagnasco said that 'there was no change in the attitude that the Catholic Church has developed toward the Jews, especially since Vatican Council II.' This means he accepts the Jewish Left political interpretation of Vatican Council II .They say Jews do not have to convert.

Their meeting was also attended by Bishop Vincenzo Paglia, President of the CEI Commission for Ecumenism and Inter Religious Dialogue.

Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, the Archbishop of Genoa and President of the Italian Conference of Catholic Bishops celebrates Holy Mass as usual and can even receive the Eucharist as a non-celebrant. He is privileged. Since on Sept.22, 2009 he publicly denied a dogma of the Catholic Church which is a mortal sin.  He said that the Revised Good Friday Prayer for the Conversion of the Jews was not for their conversion in the present times. He needs  to go for Confession and then make public amends (rectify the scandal).Otherwise he is in a state of mortal sin. It is the mortal sin of heresy and scandal. According to Canon Law he is not permitted to offer Mass in this condition. Neither is he allowed to receive the Eucharist. He is also indicating that Pope Benedict XVI is in heresy for refuting the dogma and that the pope is fallible .

He is indicating that Catholics do not pray for the conversion of the Jews, the Church no more seeks their conversion, Judaism is a path to salvation equal to the Catholic Church, Jews are saved in general in Judaism as Catholics in the Catholic Church, the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus is irrelevant, the popes in the past were fallible or so is the present pope, a dogma can be revoked, a dogma is changeable, there is no fixed objective reality, the Jewish concept of history is correct and the Church’s teachings are inferior and inadequate, it is not more a mortal sin to reject a dogma, and so the Church’s moral teachings have also been changed, the popes or Pope Benedict XVI are fallible also on morals and so other teachings can be changed like the sacrificial concept of the Mass and the Eucharist being the Body, Blood and Divinity of Our Lord.

Here are references to the dogma. They contradict the cardinal’s new doctrine.

Pope Eugene IV, Cantate Domino (1441): "The most Holy Roman Church firmly believes, professes and preaches that none of those existing outside the Catholic Church, not only pagans, but also Jews and heretics and schismatics, can have a share in life eternal; but that they will go into the "eternal fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels" (Matthew 25:41), unless before death they are joined with Her; and that so important is the unity of this ecclesiastical body that only those remaining within this unity can profit by the sacraments of the Church unto salvation, and they alone can receive an eternal recompense for their fasts, their almsgivings, their other works of Christian piety and the duties of a Christian soldier. No one, let his almsgiving be as great as it may, no one, even if he pour out his blood for the Name of Christ, can be saved, unless he remain within the bosom and the unity of the Catholic Church."

Pope Boniface I, Epistle 14.1: "It is clear that this Roman Church is to all churches throughout the world as the head is to the members, and that whoever separates himself from it becomes an exile from the Christian religion, since he ceases to belong to its fellowship."

Pope Pelagius II (578-590): "Consider the fact that whoever has not been in the peace and unity of the Church cannot have the Lord… Although given over to flames and fires, they burn, or, thrown to wild beasts, they lay down their lives, there will not be (for them) that crown of faith but the punishment of faithlessness… Such a one can be slain, he cannot be crowned… [If] slain outside the Church, he cannot attain the rewards of the Church" (Denzinger, 469).

Saint Gregory the Great (590-604), Moralia: "Now the holy Church universal proclaims that God cannot be truly worshipped saving within herself, asserting that all they that are without her shall never be saved."

Pope Sylvester II, Profession of Faith, June AD 991: "I believe that in Baptism all sins are forgiven, that one which was committed originally as much as those which are voluntarily committed, and I profess that outside the Catholic Church no one is saved."

Pope Innocent III (1198-1216), Profession of Faith prescribed for the Waldensians: "With our hearts we believe and with our lips we confess but one Church, not that of the heretics, but the Holy Roman Catholic and Apostolic Church , outside which we believe that no one is saved" (Denzinger 792).

Pope Clement VI, Letter Super Quibusdam (to Consolator the Catholicon of Armenia), September 20, 1351: "In the second place, we ask whether you and the Armenians obedient to you believe that no man of the wayfarers outside of the faith of this Church, and outside the obedience of the Pope of Rome, can finally be saved… In the ninth place, if you have believed and do believe that all who have raised themselves against the faith of the Roman Church and have died in final impenitence have been damned and have descended to the eternal punishments of hell."

Pope Leo XII (1823-1829), Encyclical Ubi Primum: "It is impossible for the most true God, who is Truth Itself, the best, the wisest Provider, and rewarder of good men, to approve all sects who profess false teachings which are often inconsistent with one another and contradictory, and to confer eternal rewards on their members. For we have a surer word of the prophet, and in writing to you We speak wisdom among the perfect; not the wisdom of this world but the wisdom of God in a mystery. By it we are taught, and by divine faith we hold, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and that no other name under heaven is given to men except the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth in which we must be saved. This is why we profess that there is no salvation outside the Church… For the Church is the pillar and ground of the truth. With reference to those words Augustine says: 'If any man be outside the Church he will be excluded from the number of sons, and will not have God for Father since he has not the Church for mother.'"

Pope Gregory XVI (1831-1846), Encyclical Summo Jugiter Studio (on Mixed marriages), 5-6, May 27, 1832: "You know how zealously Our predecessors taught that very article of faith which these dare to deny, namely the necessity of the Catholic faith and of unity for salvation. The words of that celebrated disciple of the Apostles, martyred Saint Ignatius, in his letter to the Philadelphians are relevant to this matter: 'Be not deceived, my brother; if anyone follows a schismatic, he will not attain the inheritance of the kingdom of God .' Moreover, Saint Augustine and the other African bishops who met in the Council of Cirta in the year 412 explained the same thing at greater length: 'Whoever has separated himself from the Catholic Church, no matter how laudably he lives, will not have eternal life, but has earned the anger of God because of this one crime: that he abandoned his union with Christ' (Epsitle 141). Omitting other appropriate passages which are almost numberless in the writings of the Fathers, We shall praise Saint Gregory the Great, who expressly testifies that this is indeed the teaching of the Catholic Church. Pope Pius IX (1846-1878), Allocution Singulari Quadem, December 9, 1854: "Not without sorrow we have learned that another error, no less destructive, has taken possession of some parts of the Catholic world, and has taken up its abode in the souls of many Catholics who think that one should have good hope of the eternal salvation of all those who have never lived in the true Church of Christ. Therefore, they are wont to ask very often what will be the lot and condition of those who have not submitted in any way to the Catholic faith, and, by bringing forward most vain reasons, they make a response favorable to their false opinion. Far be it from Us, Venerable Brethren, to presume on the limits of the divine mercy which is infinite; far from Us, to wish to scrutinize the hidden counsel and "judgements of God" which are "a great abyss" (Ps. 35.7) and cannot be penetrated by human thought. "For, it must be held by faith that outside the Apostolic Roman Church, no one can be saved; that this is the only ark of salvation; that he who shall not have entered therein will perish in the flood; but, on the other hand, it is necessary to hold for certain that they who labor in ignorance of the true religion, if this ignorance is invincible, will not be held guilty of this in the eyes of God. Now, in truth, who would arrogate so much to himself as to mark the limits of such an ignorance, because of the nature and variety of peoples, regions, innate dispositions, and of so many other things? There is only one divine faith which is the beginning of salvation for mankind and the basis of all justification, the faith by which the just person lives and without which it is impossible to please God and come to the community of His children (Romans 1; Hebrews 11; Council of Trent, Session 6, Chapter 8). There is only one true, holy, Catholic Church, which is the Apostolic Roman Church. Pope Pius IX (1846-1878), Encyclical Quanto conficiamur moerore, August 10, 1863: "And here, beloved Sons and Venerable Brothers, We should mention again and censure a very grave error in which some Catholics are unhappily engaged, who believe that men living in error, and separated from the true faith and from Catholic unity, can attain eternal life. Indeed, this is certainly quite contrary to Catholic teaching. It is known to Us and to you that they who labor in invincible ignorance of our most holy religion and who, zealously keeping the natural law and its precepts engraved in the hearts of all by God, and being ready to obey God, live an honest and upright life, can, by the operating power of divine light and grace, attain eternal life, since God who clearly beholds, searches, and knows the minds, souls, thoughts, and habits of all men, because of His great goodness and mercy, will by no means suffer anyone to be punished with eternal torment who has not the guilt of deliberate sin. Pope Leo XIII (1878-1903), Encyclical Annum Ingressi Sumus: "This is our last lesson to you; receive it, engrave it in your minds, all of you: by God's commandment salvation is to be found nowhere but in the Church."

Pope Pius XII (1939-1958), Allocution to the Gregorian University (17 October 1953) : "By divine mandate the interpreter and guardian of the Scriptures, and the depository of Sacred Tradition living within her, the Church alone is the entrance to salvation: She alone, by herself, and under the protection and guidance of the Holy Spirit, is the source of truth."

The Basilica of San Martino Ai Montini in the centre of Rome is a Carmelite Church. They have a center with facilities for bathing. About 150 or more men avail of showers,clean clothes and breakfast on Tuesday and Wednesday morning.

It is managed by lay Italians. Sr. Maria Carla is the Sister Incharge. She is a Montfortian Sister, one of the communities of women and men here in Rome who follow the spirituality of St. Louis di Montfort.

Or at least they claim to do so. Some do not.

St. Marie di Montfort was one of the Catholic saints who taught that most people are oriented to Hell, Catholics included. He also taught the ‘strict interpretation’ of extra ecclesiam nulla salus. i.e
Ad Gentes 7, Vatican Council II: ‘…all must be converted to Him, made known by the Church's preaching, and all must be incorporated into Him by baptism and into the Church which is His body. For Christ Himself "by stressing in express language the necessity of faith and baptism (cf. Mark 16:16; John 3:5), at the same time confirmed the necessity of the Church, into which men enter by baptism, as by a door….’
Sr. Carla as a Montfortian has no faith to share. If you are poor she will help you. Faith?!

Don Giovanni is the Carmelite, assistant priest at the Basilica of San Martino ai Montini, I was telling him yesterday of the disappointing conversation I had with Sister Carla.I asked him: if he met a non Catholic, like those outside the bathing centre could he tell that person that the Catholic Church says that he needs to convert to go to Heaven?This was the teaching of St. Teresa of Avila, St. Teresa of the Little Flower and other Carmelites.
He said that he believes what everyone else in the Catholic Church believes - that if a non a Catholic has a good conscience he can be saved.
‘If you encounter a non-Catholic? How do you know that he has a good conscience?’ I asked.
He then says that only Jesus can judge contradicting his earlier statement.
Correct. So we cannot judge personally when meeting a non Catholic. However Jesus and the Church teache us that the non Catholic needs to convert to go to avoid Hell.


'Yes', he said. The Bible says that those who are baptized will be saved. Those who believe will be saved.
Those who do not will be condemned.’ I added completing his sentence.
'Non Catholics do not believe!'
'They have an obligation to search for the truth and God will judge them accordingly', said Don Giovanni.
True. But how can Father Giovanni judge this. How can he assure himself of this fact when he meets a person.he cannot assume that the person he meets is going to Heaven. He cannot judge, like we both agreed. We do not know personally. If God will judge them accordingly why suggest that they have a good conscience already.

The Church says that the non Catholic is oriented to Hell. The Church says this in the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus, in Vatican Council II, Ad Gentes 7, in the teachings of the Church Fathers and the saints, including the Carmelites.

Father Giovanni repeats: if there is a non Catholic I meet he can be in invincible ignorance etc.
Meaning: Fr.Giovanni assumes that every non Catholic he meets is in invincible ignorance. This is the ordinay way to go to Heaven.
This is false. It is saying the baptism of desire is the ordinary way of salvation and not the baptism of water. It is also teaching that people in some rare tribe in Africa are in invincible ignorance which is the ordinary way to Heaven and not Catholic Faith and the Baptism of water.
So every Muslim he meets for instance at the Basilica are being saved in the ordinary way because they have a good conscience or are in search of the truth.

This seemed a dead end. He was contradicting himself . And we would start the circle of thinking all over again.

“What about the Law of Moses?”. I tried to reach the issue from another angle.
“If someone commits a murder he is oriented to Hell if he has not gone for Confession?”
“We cannot judge” he says again. “ Only God can judge who is going to Heaven.”
Fine. After the murderer dies only Jesus will judge. However now we know that the murderer is going in the direction of Hell. If he dies now that is the general place where murderers go.
“May be he does not know about Confession.”, Father Giovanni comes back.
Fine. There could be an exception who does not know about Confession and God will judge him.
However a person who commits a murder knows in his heart that it is wrong and the Church also teaches that it is wrong. He is oriented to Hell barring the exceptional.
“I do not think he will go to Hell”, said Fr. Giovanni.
Neither does he think that the Muslim needs to convert into the Catholic Church for salvation.He tells me this is all philosophy and he is not interested.
This has been the teaching of the Catholic Church for some 2000 years .If he used philosophy (we cannot judge a person is going to Hell) then I can do the same (we cannot judge if a person is going to Heaven). So we are left with what does the Magisterium; what does the Catholic Church teach ?

May be he thinks Muslims will be judged according to their religion.
The Judge, however founded only one religion. He wants all of us to enter this religion.Only the Catholic Church is the moral authority. Those who are knowingly outside this Church will be outside Heaven and the Presence of God after death.
So the Muslim at the Ave Maria centre needs to convert is the teaching of the Judge and his Church, the Catholic Church.

I thought the Ave Maria was a secular humanist center managed by a nun. Now I see that the same indifference, as that of Sr.Carla,  is there in this kind old Italian priest looking after the sacristy.
The Parish Priest Father Adriano was not there.

I was in the Legion of Mary in this Church. Fr.Nicola also a Carmelite was the Parish Priest. He has been transferred to Albano.
Fr.Nicola and I were in happy agreement.
